About Bizen Osafune Sword Museum

Experience the legendary tradition of Bizen sword making at this unique museum in historic Osafune Town, a renowned sword production center since the Kamakura period. This exceptional facility not only displays magnificent Bizen swords but also offers the rare opportunity to observe live sword forging processes. The monthly 'ancient forging' demonstrations, where tamahagane steel is hammered at 1,200 degrees, draw sword enthusiasts from around the world to witness this spectacular and traditional craft.

History

The Bizen Osafune Japanese Sword Museum opened in 1983 at 966 Osafune, Osafune-cho, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture, in the heartland of the Bizen sword-making tradition. Bizen Province is historically the most prolific of the Gokaden schools, producing a larger volume of surviving classical blades than any other region, and Osafune in particular became the dominant Bizen workshop town from the late Kamakura period onward. The school is associated with smiths such as Mitsutada, who founded the Osafune line in the 13th century, and later masters including Nagamitsu and Kagemitsu, whose choji (clove-shaped) hamon and itame grain became characteristic Bizen features. A catastrophic flood of the Yoshii River in 1590 is commonly cited as ending the great Osafune lineage. The modern museum was established to preserve this regional legacy and sits within a broader complex known as Bizen Osafune Sword Village, which groups together working forges and craft studios.

What to See

The museum rotates blades from its collection approximately every two months, allowing visitors to see a range of Bizen works across several visits rather than a fixed permanent display; items on show typically include swords designated as Important Cultural Properties. Beyond the main gallery, the surrounding Sword Village houses a working forge where visitors can observe the full production chain: traditional forging of folded steel, engraving (horimono), polishing (togi), and scabbard and handle fitting, with direct conversation with the craftsmen. A public forging demonstration is held once a month on the second Sunday, when tamahagane is worked at roughly 1,200 degrees Celsius in the traditional manner. Periodic hands-on workshops cover sword maintenance, tanto-making and related disciplines, and the museum has hosted special exhibitions including one themed around blades from the Evangelion anime series.

Visitor Tips

Plan 90 minutes to two hours to cover the museum and the surrounding Sword Village forges. The second-Sunday-of-the-month forge demonstration is the main draw for enthusiasts and is generally free to watch, though schedules should be reconfirmed on the official Okayama tourism page before travelling. Access is via JR Ako Line from Okayama Station to Osafune Station, then a short taxi ride. English signage is limited, so bilingual pamphlets help. Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden combine well as a day trip.
