About Tsukamoto Samurai sword Museum

Tsukamoto Samurai sword Museum is a samurai-themed tourist attraction in Japan (P69H+G8 Sakura, Chiba, Japan). Visitor information sourced from public listings — see the official website for up-to-date details.

History

The Tsukamoto Museum (Tsukamoto Bijutsukan) is a private sword-focused art museum in Urashinmachi, Sakura City, Chiba, about 800 meters south of Keisei Sakura Station. It is operated as an incorporated public-interest foundation and is built around the personal Japanese-sword collection of the late Sozan Tsukamoto, a Sakura-born businessman. The collection was first opened to the public in 1965 in Tokyo's Ginza as the Japanese Sword Art Museum, later relocated to Chiba City, and finally moved in 1983 to Tsukamoto's hometown of Sakura. Sakura's own samurai heritage as a Hotta-clan castle town makes it a fitting permanent home.

What to See

The museum holds roughly 400 swords along with about 250 fittings and scabbards (koshirae and tsuba), one of the larger private nihonto collections in Japan. Only about 20 pieces are on display at any time, rotated on roughly a three-month cycle, so each opening presents a curated sub-theme. Visitors see blades by renowned swordsmiths shown in subdued lighting designed for studying hamon (temper line) and jigane (steel surface). Photography is not allowed inside, and the atmosphere is scholarly rather than interactive. Combine a visit with the nearby Bukeyashiki samurai houses and the National Museum of Japanese History on the Sakura Castle site.

Visitor Tips

Plan carefully: the museum is famously open only on the third Saturday of each month, so your visit must align with that date. Admission is free and no booking is required. It is about a 10-minute walk south of Keisei Sakura Station. Signage is primarily in Japanese, so a translation app or sword-term glossary helps. Allow about 45 to 60 minutes for the compact rotating display.
